If the age of legal finacial responsiblity for child of married parents is 18 why would the age be different for non-married parents? If a married couple has a child at what age are the parents no longer legally finacially responsible for them?
You're right. In some states child support goes up to 21 if the child is in school and living with the other parent. But where I live, it is 18.If a married couple has a child at what age are the parents no longer legally finacially responsible for them?
the general answer is 18, but there is the exception of having a later age specifically stated in a divorce decree. My parents are divorced and my mother wanted my brother and I to have our college paid for so she made sure that the final divorce agreement stipulated that she paid 1/3 of our expenses until we graduated college and my father paid 2/3. ( the judge approved this because it is as close as possible to what would have happened if they were not divorced) Without having it specifically stated in a divorce the age is 18 for financial support. It is always 18 as far as legal responsibility if you were to get in trouble.
I see what you are saying and you are right. Some people have in their divorce decree that child support has to be paid until they are out of school and that includes college. It does not seem right. You also have to provide health insurance.
Its not different, you are financially liable for your child until they turn 18yrs, but you are emotionally liable for your child forever.
It's not different for married or non married parents. Until a child is 18 a parent is legally responsible for them in all aspects.
Actually in some states (Massachusetts, I'm looking at you) the child support can last until 24, if the child in question is still in school full time.
because the government system is messed up.Sadly for separated parents its 21 only if the kid is a full time student in college after the age of 18.
its not.
when you are 18 you are an adult.
Until they're 7
18
